Colorado Boulevard: Rep. Chu Demands USPS Protect Workers From Extreme Heat

August 15, 2024

On Thusrday, August 15, Rep. Judy Chu, along with 77 Members of Congress, called on the United States Postal Service (USPS) to immediately implement the nation’s first-ever federal heat rule.

The 77 members of Congress released a letter urging USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to “choose action over delay” and save lives by implementing the federal heat protections in his workforce now. With USPS failing to protect so many of its own employees, the members lay out a simple solution: begin following the federal heat rule proposed by the Biden-Harris Administration immediately.

“As climate change drives record-breaking summer temperatures across the United States, the risk of heat-related illness and death among U.S. Postal Service letter carriers has grown more dire than ever. I thank the Biden-Harris Administration and OSHA for issuing a proposed rule, modeled after my Asuncion Valdivia Heat Illness and Fatality Prevention Act, that will protect workers from heat. But this rule will take time to implement, and it is evident that the Postal Service must immediately take stronger measures to protect the health and well-being of its workforce,” said Rep. Chu. “USPS should immediately implement the standards in OSHA’s proposed rule on Heat Injury and Illness Prevention in both outdoor and indoor work environments. Protecting workers from high heat temperatures is crucial to prevent serious health risks.”

Msnbc: House Democrats prepare to highlight right-wing 'Project 2025' plans

June 11, 2024

The Stop Project 2025 task force features six other Democratic lawmakers — including Reps. Judy Chu and Jamie Raskin — and plans to host public forums, led by lawmakers on various aspects of Project 2025. I think it’s important to reiterate that it doesn’t appear to take a Trump victory in November as a foregone conclusion. To the contrary, this is a protective measure to guard against the illiberal policy proposals if Trump wins. But it’s also, more importantly, in my view, an attempt to supercharge the public’s awareness of these proposals before voters cast ballots. Thus far, awareness campaigns about Project 2025 have primarily been led by independent groups — like the watchdog Media Matters, for example

The Advocate: A path toward dignity and equality with PRIDE Act

June 4, 2024

By Congresswoman Judy Chu & Congresswoman Becca Balint

Our legislation has two main objectives: rectifying existing inequity in the tax code. First, it would enable same-sex couples who married before the Windsor decision to amend their tax filings and claim the refunds they should have been entitled to—even though the deadline had passed. Secondly, it would embrace inclusivity by eliminating gendered language in the tax code, including substituting terms like "husband" or "wife" with "spouse." Even though these terms are currently interpreted to be gender-neutral, it is essential to make sure all couples, regardless of sexual or gender identity, are represented and explicitly acknowledged within the tax code.

crescenta valley weekly: What an Expanded San Gabriel Mountains National Monument Means for our Communities

May 30, 2024

By Rep. Judy Chu

In my time representing Southern Californians in Congress, few moments have encapsulated how advocacy powers change as vividly as watching President Biden sign a proclamation to expand the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument last month. After working side-by-side with so many leaders and advocates for over 20 years to bring resources to the San Gabriel Mountains, I was proud to stand alongside Vice President Harris, other members of Congress, indigenous leaders and environmental champions in the Oval Office as the President expanded the boundaries of the monument by over 100,000 acres.

I was so overjoyed to continue the celebrations in California a few days later with many more environmental champions and community leaders. This is a fight I have been honored to be a part of for decades. Over the past year, I joined with my incredible Senate partner Senator Alex Padilla to emphasize to President Biden that, despite the natural treasures right here in our backyard, Los Angeles is among the most park-poor regions of the country. And even though we got President Obama to make history in 2014 by creating this monument, some of the most-visited areas and most significant natural and cultural resources in the western Angeles National Forest were left out. This meant that some of the busiest areas were left without the resources they needed to keep the park clean and safe for visitors.

Yahoo News: Meng, Hirono and Chu lead effort to stop GOP's attempt to revive Trump-era China Initiative

January 23, 2024

A group of Democratic lawmakers are vehemently opposing House Republicans' push to reinstate a controversial Trump-era program accused of sparking racial profiling and discrimination against Asian Americans.

About the controversial program: The China Initiative, launched in 2018 to purportedly counter Chinese espionage, was discontinued by the Department of Justice (DOJ) in 2022. According to the dissenting lawmakers, the program is incompatible with civil rights values, noting that it resulted in unjust accusations against Asian American academics and scientists.

Challenging GOP's rationale: On Jan. 22, the Democratic lawmakers, led by Rep. Grace Meng (D, NY-6), Rep. Judy Chu (D, CA-27) and Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI), expressed their concerns in a letter to congressional leaders. They challenged the GOP's characterization of the China Initiative's termination as "irresponsible" and argued that the initiative was a flawed prosecutorial tool. The Democrats emphasized that the program led to dropped charges, dismissals and acquittals due to a lack of evidence.

kff health news: Workers Pay the Price While Congress and Employers Debate Need for Heat Regulations

September 5, 2023

President Joe Biden in 2021 tasked the Occupational Safety and Health Administration with developing rules to prevent heat injury and illness. But that 46-step process can take more than a decade and might stall if a Republican is elected president in 2024, because the GOP has generally opposed occupational health regulations over the past 20 years. These rules might require employers to provide ample drinking water, breaks, and a cool-down space in shade or air conditioning when temperatures rise above a certain threshold.

On Sept. 7, OSHA will begin meetings with small-business owners to discuss its proposals, including actions that employers would take when temperatures rise to 90 degrees.

As this summer has broken heat records, Rep. Judy Chu (D-Calif.) and other members of Congress have pushed legislation that would speed OSHA’s rule-making process. The bill is named after Asunción Valdivia, a farmworker who fell unconscious while picking grapes in California on a 105-degree day in 2004. His son picked him up from the fields, and Valdivia died of heatstroke on the drive home. “Whether on a farm, driving a truck, or working in a warehouse, workers like Asunción keep our country running while enduring some of the most difficult conditions,” Chu said in a July statement urging Congress to pass the bill.
